In between the lines

bunypersadmithi

At first glance the painting shows a few seashells and crayfish. However, reading ‘in between the lines’ allows us to see its true depiction, it shows the vulnerability of sealife by having the shells as symbols of sea and at the same time correlating them with crayfish which are animals with a falliable mode of protection : a hard shell that needs a period of total regeneration which leaves the animal completely vulnerable.

(Based on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water)

I used watercolour and i experimented with bleach (javel) for the washed effect in the background. Through my artwork i wanted to show how even the amazing marine life have its vulnerabilities. And those flaws make the much more interesting and beautiful. Therefore it makes people aware of our amazing coral ecosystems and the power they hold for Mauritius, the ‘star of indian ocean’.
