The painting ‘Survival’ is about the escape of the marine ecosystem from destruction of coral reefs. Overfishing and bleaching of corals affect badly the coral and marine ecosystems. The nets represent overfishing and the colorless coral reefs below represent bleaching and dead corals.
What I wanted to show through this painting are some beauty aspects as well as the calamity of coral reefs. The destruction of coral reefs will highly affect many marine species such as sea turtle, fishes, jellyfish which are dependent on coral reefs for food and habitat. Sea diving also will be pompous with the loss of coral reefs.
Moreover, I have used acrylic paint. For the upper part, I have used palette knife to give the effect of waves crashing. The nets are painted in dark blue to contrast with the colorful colors. The focal point, that is the turtle and the coral reefs with the fishes and starfish are painted in bright colors to show the lively aspect. The jellyfish tentacles are prolonged to the coral reefs to show the aspect of support.
The contrast between the colorful and white coral reefs create an impact and raises awareness on saving the coral ecosystems.
