Un monde hors de soi

Ariana Cziffra

I like to think of human subjects as « worlds » in themselves that are striving or struggling to relate to Otherness one way or another. 2015 was marked by the attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris, which, beyond the artworld, shook the world at large. When struck by such attacks of human life by human life itself, I seek solace by embracing non-human life. This piece condenses traces of trauma with a desire to see human creativity embrace the liveliness of natural forms of creation and creatures, whilst recognizing the delicate and intricate stakes posed by nature and culture beyond our shores. The palette used here to subjectively map out a geographical and oceanographic world view happens to draw upon the four colours of the Mauritian flag. And yet these colours are also universal. Paint, much like the oceans and the underseaworld, holds potential to relate things and people in surprising ways sometimes.
